H-Wood and Love Out Loud West

The first Love Out Loud took place at Prohibition in 2006 due to the generosity of Rich Herschenfeld and Ian Duke in affording the opportunity. It stands to reason, given that the locale itself was part of the inspiration. In 2004 Kamar de los Reyes held a benefit for Gabriel Project and packed the place, which also stands to reason, given that Daytime fans are very loyal.

Having experienced the AIDS crisis from the very beginning makes it a life changing experience. Another source of inspiration, the We All Have Aids Campaign which launched on World AIDS day December 1, 2005 brings the perfect attitude into an arena where combat has taken place for over two decades.

In the movie Spartacus when all the rebellious slaves were captured and the Roman overseers wanted to punish their leader it was asked who among them was Spartacus. All of them declared themselves to be Spartacus in solidarity with their charismatic leader. “I Am Spartacus” has come to mean “I identify with you.” A similar moment in the movie In & Out met with better consequences when the students declared their solidarity with their gay teacher by declaring themselves to be gay.

It’s what AIDS Walk is all about, viz. declaring solidarity with the HIV-positive population. The logical progression is for a company like Smart + Strong to have a presence there.

Fund-raising can be accessed via a team identified as a corporate entity, if you will, and/or individuals using their personal resources to do so. There is strength in numbers. A team with a strong identity can utilize events and other fund raising opportunities so easily accessible in New York City and Los Angeles.

In 2005 with the help of Chris Meloni's participation in eBay auctions it was easy to raise funds as an individual. It seemed a natural progression as a member of the POZ family to raise the bar as far as fund-raising was concerned. When it happened it was gratifying. Ilene Kristen was the very first to step up and when Thorsten Kaye came on board the event started to take shape because his loyal fans have stepped up to give it life, especially in New York.

Michael Clay of Austin, TX helped provide the theme. Michael could tell you many a tale of his close friends from his Nashville years and more than one has inspired his original material. They were years full of creativity and connecting personalities. The list seems endless and certainly memorable.

Michael Clay’s signature song is the incomparable "Love Out Loud," a paean to loving as one’s nature dictates. It arrived at the very end of the set starting out unassumingly with an autobiographical sketch of how the emotional struggles of youth brought the singer to musical expression a metaphor/simile for loving and living. It was that part of the show where everyone in the band had the opportunity for self expression. It was cathartic and exhilarating.

I was born with bugle horns and trumpets in my heart,
Mandolins & accordions & voices in three parts
Pounding drums and guitar strums
And choirs singing out
I was born to love, love out loud

It became the theme of the event. Michael came up with his band and filled Prohibition with a joyous noise along with Ilene Kristen. In 2007, Ken Lundie became part of the musical tapestry. John Kouri and Tremors became the band of the hour, so to speak, with Ilene Kristen, Barbara Porteus and Mr. Lundie once again. In 2008, there were even more celebrities in attendance with CBS shows coming on board with Marj Dusay taking stage to address the attendees. It has become an Upper West Side tradition. This year the musical experience achieved new heights with the addition of John Pagano who graced Bacharach to the Future.

Christopher Meloni of NBC’s Law & Order: SVU took time out of a very busy schedule to greet his many fervent fans. He actually left to attend yet another charity event for Sloan Kettering.

Now it’s time for Love Out Loud West. Los Angeles, a tough nut to crack, provided a memorable evening at East/West Lounge for AIDS Walk Los Angeleslast October. Sherri Lewis, Ted Detwiler, Kristoff St. John, Patrika Darbo and, of course, Ilene Kristen were there among a large crowd of celebrities who came out to support the cause.

This year the kind folks at H-Wood are providing the space for us. It's October 15, 2009 from 6:00 to 9:00 fro $25.00 come visit and have fun while helping a worthy cause. Special guests scheduled to appear include actress Ilene Kristen (One Life to Live), Sherri Lewis ( Straight Girl in a Queer World, Divas Simply Singing), Anne Walker (Sordid Lives), Stacy Haiduk (The Young and the Restless), Eileen Davidson (The Young and The Restless) Taylor Spreitler (Days of Our Lives), Patrika Darbo (Days of Our Lives, Charlie Wilson’s War), Kate Linder (The Young & the Restless), Sean Kanan (The Young and The Restless), Ted Detwiler(Sordid Lives), David Moretti (The Lair), and singer John Pagano (Pure Imagination).

Good friends Amy Beard and Diane Nilsen are on hand to help with the preparations. If you can't make it, don't forget you can always make a donation--click here--to our team and if you are coming out, let us know! and 212.938.2045

Love Out Loud for Sean Kanan

Soap Opera Digest had the right idea in nominating Sean Kanan as outstanding newcomer back in 1992 for his portrayal of General Hospital’s A.J. Quartermaine. Corbin Bernsen also knew what he was doing when he cast him in the feature film Carpool Guy. Other feature film credits include, Sons of Italy, as well as Hack and Jack Rio, both of which he produced. He recently completed a four month run in the hit play, It’s Just Sex. Look for the Antonio Banderas produced web series, Camera Café, an office comedy shot solely from the angle of a coffee machine. This new web series has already been popularly adapted in several other countries and is backed by some heavy hitters, giving it a pretty good foundation. Camera Café also allows Sean to utilize his comedic skills. Source

For five years he portrayed the studly cad Deacon Sharpe on The Bold & The Beautiful, a character he has now brought to The Young & The Restless. Michael Fairman’s interview with him is not only revealing but indicative of the regenerative nature of the astrological sign of Scorpio of which Sean is a native. In addition to acting, Kanan frequents the comedy club circuit and makes numerous appearances at the world famous Hollywood Improv and the HaHa where he offers his perspective on his 10 years in daytime television, as well as living in Italy and getting beaten up by Daniel Larusso in The Karate Kid III. He also travels with the USO, entertaining in places such as Bosnia and Kosovo.

Mr. Kanan is no stranger to the healing process and his stepping up to our fund-raiser for AIDS Walk Los Angeles is his expression of solidarity with that very process. We are very proud to have him on our team. He'll be at H-Wood on October 15, 2009.

Here is his official site, the source of much of this information.

Love Out Loud for Natalie Hiatt

Marcus Terell and the Serenades have made the very wise decision to include the very talented and beautiful Natalie Hiatt in their performances on America’s Got Talent. We know the wisdom thereof because Natalie was there for us in Bacharach to the Future. Those of us who know her on a personal level couldn’t be happier, especially the crew at Prohibition. So, right about a week from now, Natalie will be gracing the small screen serenading you as a Serenade. Rock on, Natty!

"Hiatt is extraordinary ... the appeal and formidable lung power of a blessed mutant who is equal parts Bernadette Peters and Jennifer Tilly but entirely her own creation ...”

Steve Walker, The Pitch Kansas City.

Love Out Loud for Stacy Haiduk

All My Children fans knew Stacy Haiduk as Hannah, who vied for the heart of Zach Slater. However, The Young & the Restless fans are loving to hate her as whacky stalker, Mary Jane with a Jack Abbott fixation. It is not surprising at all that Soaps In Depth gave this very entertaining actress one of their gold stars. Michael Fairman on articulated it very well by saying, "The unsettling, disturbing, and brilliant acting choices of Y&R's Stacy Haiduk have made Mary Jane Benson one of Genoa City's all-time whack jobs." TV Guide Canada’s Nelson Branco also praises her, "As Mary Jane, Stacy Haiduk has proven herself to be one of the most skilled and crazy-talented actresses on soaps. ...I rewind several of her scenes to dissect and bask in the glory of her brilliant, awe-inspiring acting choices." She has also made the great choice to help us out on October 15 for Love Out Loud West much to POZ magazine’s and AIDS Walk Los Angeles’ good fortune. Come out to greet this very talented lady with a heart of gold.

Lovin' Kate Linder

Kate Linder joined the cast of The Young and The Restless in April, 1982, as Esther Valentine, confidante and housekeeper to Katherine Chancellor (Jeanne Cooper). On April 10, 2008, Linder was honored with a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Lee Phillip Bell and Jeanne Cooper spoke at her well-attended ceremony.

She was named celebrity spokesperson for The ALS Association in 2005 and recently established Kate's Club to get fans and other actors involved in the fight against ALS, commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease, following her brother-in-law's ALS diagnosis. Linder is also active with the Make-A-Wish Foundation, among other charities, and has visited troops on USO tours to Afghanistan, Pakistan, South Korea and Guantanamo Bay in addition to military bases in the United States Linder is a founding member of TV Cares, the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences AIDS awareness and fundraising arm. She was also the only daytime actress to be featured in Portraits of Life with Love, a coffee table book published to raise funds for various AIDS organizations.

She was also the first daytime celebrity to compete in the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach's Pro/Celebrity Race. She is married to Ronald Linder, a leading expert and author on drug abuse. The couple, married on Valentine's Day in 1976. Kate is well known and very much respected among her peers and we are blessed to have her on our team. Out Loud for Taylor Spreitler

The young and beautiful native of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, Taylor Spreitler made her debut in the entertainment business at the tender age of six, winning, no less, a statewide talent and beauty contest. After competing at the national level, she and her Mom were quickly approached by several agents. The following summer Taylor hit the bright lights of New York City in ads for Saks 5th Avenue, Macy’s, Lands End, Avon, McCall's, Brides, Parents Magazine and Junior Magazine while landing the cover of Child Magazine. Once she made a very natural transition into acting, Taylor booked her very first audition, a national campaign for Motrin. It didn’t take long before she was seen in many more and eventually landing a notable guest-starring role on Law & Order:SVU. This mult-talented young woman is also known for being an accomplished singer. Since January she has been seen as Mia on NBC’s Days of Our Lives. This accomplished young actress will be participating in POZ’s fund-raiser for AIDS Walk Los Angeles on October 15, 2009 at H-Wood.
